Has the World Gone Mad?!?!

Okay, I know there are way worse things going on in the world than this but I was completely baffled when I saw the following video and I couldn't resist sharing...

I'm not really a Rascal Flats fan and I have managed to avoid Bieber Fever (I think there's a vaccine for that now actually) but this whole pairing just seemed weird. Not as weird as this one though...

If you can make it through the whole video, listen to the lyrics. They're hilariously bad but not as bad as the lyrics in this song...

Okay, I know that one's pretty much old news by now and I probably shouldn't have contributed to the craze but I needed to make sure you had seen it so that this video would make sense...

Stephen Colbert is just so good at bringing balance to the pop culture universe. Thank you Mr. Colbert and Mr. Fallon for making us laugh at how silly all of this is and managing to benefit this charity foundation at the same time.

Perhaps I'm just missing something, but I was left with a whole bunch of questions after that first one.

1) Who is Justin Bieber? If he's the little kid, he has quite a nice voice, actually.

2) Why is someone with such a nice voice singing such an asinine song?

3) Why are there TWO men singing that song? Together? They both want the same girl? One is singing back-up to the other but they can't decide who gets to be lead?

4) What is up with the "guys hanging out in the studio" angle (I guess they're commiserating about wanting this girl...?) Except that then they're having a photo shoot. No, wait, it's a music video after all. I mean a photo shoot. I mean we can't decide.

Since you posted it under the "world gone mad" title, I'm guessing none of this is news to you.

Ok, and regarding Colbert's "Friday"...

I can't believe how much better the spoof is than the original!

Emily,
Yes, Justin Bieber is the little kid with the nice voice. He is very popular among the "tween" set. I will not deny that he is talented- he is also wicked on the drum set- I just have trouble appreciating what he does because I'm not the target audience. More and more I find myself cringing at what those crazy youngsters are up to now- a sign that I'm no longer with it. Although, I never really bought into the whole teen heartthrob thing so, perhaps I never really was with "it."
Yes, it is super weird that two men (well, a man and a boyman) are singing that song together. Even if they did actually want the same girl(hey, I guess it happens), what age would she have to be in order for it to be appropriate for either of them to be with her? Too young and Gary (the Rascall Flatts guy) goes to jail, too old and she goes to jail for robbing the cradle with Justin. Yikes.
And yes, I agree that the whole, "we're shooting the video as the video" concept is silly (and worn out). The fact that this seems to be a hybrid video/photo shoot just makes it more confusing and strange. Maybe it was so expensive to get these two acts in the same place at the same time they couldn't afford a video editor. ;)
Oh, yeah, and you're totally right about Colbert's spoof. It had way better production value than the very thing it was spoofing. Amazing.
Thanks for weighing in Emily. I'm glad all of this boggled your mind too.
