Again With the Zippered Pouches!

Post 17 of ? in the series, "Why I Haven't Blogged in Over Six Months"

I finally photographed these and decided to share them with y'all. I'm almost caught up. I'm going to have to make some more stuff so that I have more to blog about.

Hobo Bag (Work in Progress)

Post 14 of ? in the series, "Why I Haven't Blogged in Over Six Months"

This is another project out of the book Simply Sublime Bags: 30 No-Sew, Low-Sew Projects, by Jodi Kahn. I bought this book because it included fun projects to make out of unusual items. This bag was supposed to be made from a zippered pillowcase so that you don't have to worry about sewing in a zipper. Since I've conquered most of my zipper phobias I decided to cheat and use some fabric I found in the remnants pile at the fabric store instead. I also wanted to include a lining and some pockets (which would have been a terrifying concept about a year ago but now, totally doable). Once I got the whole thing put together, I realized that the bag could really use a gusset (to make it flat enough on the bottom to be able to sit upright on its own) and a longer strap. I have yet to make these alterations and the current strap is still just pinned in place (which, at least, will make it easier to fix). I feel like I'm on the right track with this one but for some reason I ran out of motivation. It got shelved and I had almost forgotten about it but I happened to stumble upon it while looking for something else. I do plan on finishing this bag but probably not until next year.

Tablecloth Bag

Post 13 of ? in the series, "Why I Haven't Blogged in Over Six Months"

I made this box bag out of a cheap vinyl tablecloth I got at Big Lots. My one regret is forgetting to put a handle on it- literally, I was so excited to stitch it together and see how it was going to turn out that I forgot to include the strap that I had already measured and cut- doh! The pattern is from Simply Sublime Bags: 30 No-Sew, Low-Sew Projects, by Jodi Kahn. I added the lining and sewed the zipper in traditionally but her instructions are great. I recommend this book for some great sewing alternatives like staples and duct tape. Exciting stuff!

I have been using this as a bag-within-a-bag to protect my small knitting projects (like socks and dishcloths) for about four months now so it's starting to show a little bit of wear but overall it's holding up pretty well.

Finally Some Owls!

Another zippered pouch! I picked up this fabric at Tall Mouse just because I loved it so much (I know, I have to stop doing that) but it had a purpose as soon as I decided to attempt another zippered pouch. I am super happy with how this came out. I especially love the surprise pop of color you get when you open it. I'm planning on making a matching messenger bag out of the same fabric because I love it so much.

Finally Something Plaid!

This is another little ditty out of The New Handmade- my new most "favoritist" book ever! I was a little nervous about making anything with a zipper. It's always just seemed too scary but the instructions in this book were just what I needed to conquer my zipper phobias. Now I just feel silly for being such a chicken about the whole thing because it really wasn't that complicated. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities and I'm pretty excited about it.
